Bring your mind back on track
“Calm mind brings inner strength and self confidence so that’s very important for good health” -- By Dalai Lama
That is true but what is the reality? We all want a relaxed mind but it becomes very difficult when our mind is thinking about something and is fully stressed. I remember once I told my client some strategies and the response was “kahana bahut asaan hai but karna bahut mushkil”. “That’s true but it is not impossible”, I said. So, what is the way out?
I was once in a very bad phase of my life when I was finding it too hard to relax my mind. I practiced some strategies that time. But, if you follow the relaxation strategies directly you may find it hard initially. Also, if you try to run away from the situation, it will be very difficult as unintentionally you are remembering the situation repeatedly. If you follow this process in sequence, it will be very easy to migrate from a stressful mind to a relaxed mind.
Step 1: Prepare yourself for the process
Practice some breathing techniques to give you instant relief. Deep breathing releases good neurotransmitters in your body which help you to calm down your mood. But if it is too hard for you to breathe now, go out for a walk in an open environment and practice your breathing there while walking. Do this walk for 10-15 minutes, if time allows otherwise 5 minutes is good too.
Now come back and isolate yourself in the thinking corner of your house. A thinking corner is a place where no one is able to distract you and where you spend your time thinking about new ideas. Keep a pen and paper with you.
Step 2: Work on distractions
Practice problem-solving techniques. Until you find a good solution to the problem distracting you from relaxation, you can’t get a permanent solution. So, follow this process.
- What are you thinking?
Define your problem with all its aspects like what is the problem, how long are you facing it, who is a part of it, where the problem started, etc. - Possible solutions
Write down whatever is possible to resolve this problem. Don’t worry if the solution is pathetic or what people will think. No one is going to watch your paper. - You or another person
Now analyze if your solutions are focused on changing you or the other person. Tick all solutions which are focused on changes in yourself. Changing another person is not possible unless you change yourself. It doesn’t mean that others are good and you are bad. It means that you are trying to be more flexible and open-minded. - Best solution
Find out the best solutions from amongst the ticked ones. Decide your solution on the basis of how easy and feasible it is for you to implement the particular solution. Also, keep in mind the resources available to you. If you are not able to find a solution, think of possible solutions again. - Prepare yourself for implementation and challenges
To be frank, this is the most difficult part of the whole game. It is because we have low self-confidence and we prefer to procrastinate because of fear of failure. If you keep thinking, you will not implement. The best way is to just implement without thinking about success or failure. In Bhagwad gita, it is said –
“karma karo phal ki chinta mat karo”
which means leaving results to Shri Krishna and doing whatever it takes - Prepare for changes if necessary
While you implement, you might observe there are some changes required always. Be flexible to implement any change. Don’t be rigid in your decisions. - See your success
Your success will make you more confident and happy and now it is the time to practice relaxation strategies.
Caution: Don’t try to ignore what you are thinking. The more you ignore, the more it comes back to you
Step 3: Relax yourself
There are multiple techniques of relaxation but there are three techniques that I practiced personally.
- Meditate daily – You don’t require hours of meditation. 10-15 minutes a day is good enough for having a balanced mind. Practice any form of meditation. All are good. I personally practiced chakra meditation which could bring more balance in my life.
- Music – Soothing slow music including romantic songs and ghazals was a big help.
- Guided visualization – It is a technique through which you visualize a beautiful life, a nice landscape, or a feel-good situation which gives you relaxation
Step 4: Power your mind
Read self-help and personal growth books which change your mind’s paradigm for the challenges you might face in the future. I recommend some good books which helped me in my tough times.
- ‘What to say when you talk to yourself’ by Shad Helmstetter
- ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne
You can also watch some videos which are very good for your happiness, growth, and success. Here is a video for you – ‘The strangest secret’ by Earl Nightingale
The third way to power your mind is to associate with positive people. Associate with people who are uplifting you and stay away from people who are pulling you down.
